The other day I was out surfing…well…I mean I was thinking about surfing and wondered how fast can a shark swim? Truth be told I knew it was much faster than the average wave carrying a surfer but still an interesting question non the less.
The question of how fast does a shark swim depends on which type of shark, also speeds vary if they are going with or against the current. In general a large shark swims at around 1.5 miles per hour when cruising around. To date, the short-finned Mako is fastest recorded shark with a speed of 30mph. There are unconfirmed reports of other sharks reaching speeds of 60-70mph for short bursts.
